Christopher Tufton and Williams still senators, says Attorney General

KINGSTON, Jamaica:

Attorney General Patrick Atkinson today has advised the President of the Senate that Dr Christopher Tufton and Arthur Williams are still members of the Upper House and are entitled to take their seats.



He made the disclosure at a press conference now underway.



According to Mr Atkinson, if Ruel Reid and Dr Nigel Clarke attend the next sitting of the Senate they could be regarded as "strangers".



Reid and Clarke were appointed in 2013 after the Opposition Leader submitted to the Governor General the undated, pre-signed resignation letters of Dr Tufton and Williams.



Last week, the Constitutional Court ruled that the letters were null and void.



Atkinson says the Governor General did not have a duty to investigate the resignation letters submitted by Holness.

Meanwhile, Atkinson said he would not recommend that Clarke or Reid be asked to pay back the stipend they received while they were in the Senate.
