Hundreds of Christians descended on Spanish Town and its environs in a religious march dubbed Spanish Town Belongs to Jesus.

Led by Tarrant Baptist Church Pastor Reverend Jeffrey Shuttleworth, they started at the Jubilee Worship Centre on Valdez Road and walked to the Old Harbour round-a-bout then to the communities of Tawes Pen, Oxford Street, Melbourne Lane, Morrison Street and Condron Lane.

The marchers later assembled at the Spanish Town bus park, which has been the scene of bloodshed, extortion and other forms of criminality.

The police and military personal established a checkpoint at Twickenham Park where vehicles entering the town were stopped and searched.

The marchers were divided into ten groups to take their message into ten of the most volatile communities in the old capital.

According to Reverend Shuttleworth, buses will take individuals to the communities, where witnessing, counselling and prayers will be offered.

An evangelistic meeting is scheduled to take place at the bus park starting at 7 o’clock.

“We will be praying specific prayers and making declarations over Spanish Town,” Reverend Shuttleworth told The Gleaner.

The march is scheduled to end later this evening.

Two weeks ago Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared a public state of emergency in sections of the old capital.

Parliament last week approved an extension beyond 14 days. Several individuals have been detained and are currently in custody, including Andre “Black Man” Bryan, the reputed leader of one of the breakaway factions of the Clansman Gang.
