No plans to take over Moneague College - National Security Ministry

The Ministry of National Security says it has no plans to take over the Moneague College in St Ann.

The assurance comes as the ministry seeks to clarify recent comments made by National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang.

"We are already seeking to take over much of the Moneague Teachers' College to have advanced training for police officers," Chang said during a crime and security forum in St Catherine last month.

But in a statement today, the ministry said discussions are ongoing with Moneague College and other tertiary institutions to provide a certificate programme in security science.

"The ministry has entered into discussions with Moneague College in an effort to continue building partnerships in providing training opportunities for members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the wider security sector," the statement said.
This follows the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding with three other institutions -- Montego Bay Community College, Hydel University College and the Catholic College of Mandeville -- to create a special faculty for the training of potential JCF recruits in a certificate course for fundamentals in security science.

The ministry said it recognises the value of the Moneague College to the communities in the parish of St. Ann and its surroundings, and its invaluable contribution to nation building and remains committed to leveraging this partnership in a manner that improves its legacy and continued contribution to national development.
