As post-Hurricane Melissa recovery continues, more schools in Region Three, which covers St Ann and Trelawny, are set to reopen this week.

Of the 123 institutions in the region, 50 suffered significant damage during the Category 5 storm.

Regional Director Karlene Segre said 57 schools reopened between November 10 and 14. For the week of November 17 to 21, another 30 schools resumed classes, including 21 primary and nine secondary. York Castle High reopened on a phased basis, admitting only grades 10 to 13.

“This week, (November 24 to 28) an additional 13 primary and nine secondary schools are slated to be opened,” Segre told The Gleaner.

Among them is St Hilda’s Diocesan High School, which is also reopening in phases. Grades 11 to 13 students are expected to attend all week, and grade 10 students will report today and Wednesday, November 25 and 26. Grades eight and nine will attend on Thursday and Friday.

Segre noted that a new schedule would take effect in December as recovery efforts continue.
