Young Jamaica says claims that Gordon House was unguarded during arson attack false
Young Jamaica, the youth arm of the governing Jamaica Labour Party, says the Opposition should guard against actions that mislead the public arising from this morning's suspected arson at Gordon House.
The organisation took Opposition Spokesperson on Information, Nekeisha Burchell, to task for “falsely” claiming that the parliamentary building was "left unguarded" amid the incident.
In a statement reacting to the incident, Burchell called for a comprehensive probe into the matter.
“We expect that the authorities will also investigate the absence of security personnel at the building. It is unacceptable that such an institution would be left unguarded, allowing the suspected arsonist unrestricted access to its halls,” she stated in a media release this morning.
But, Young Jamaica says this is false.
It noted that the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) assists in providing security to Gordon House on a 24/7 basis.
Further, it said it was the work of security personnel which aimed to cauterise the incident.
“We also understand that it was the swift intervention of the JCF which resulted in the criminal(s) not being able to escalate the attack on the parliamentary building and vastly limited the extent of the potential damage to the historic structure. We commend the police.
“Young Jamaica sincerely hopes that a thirst for attention or an intent to mislead are not influencing these elementary blunders by Ms Burchell and the PNP where misinformation is entered into the public domain.”
