The National Water Commission (NWC) says it is increasing surveillance and patrol of its systems in St Ann amid a "disturbing trend of deliberate vandalism", which has left several communities without water.

In a media release Saturday morning, the NWC said for the second time in as many weeks, thieves have struck a critical water supply installation, this time at the Egypt Relift Facility.

It says the vandals stole critical electrical components to operate the pumping unit, which will require significant resources to replace.

The NWC says the latest incident will severely impact its ability to deliver water to Browns Town communities reliant on this facility, including Ingleside, Orange Hill, Bennin, Top Liberty Valley, Goshen, Marble Top, St Christopher Drive, Tanzie Corner, Addison Park Drive, New Road and Cockpit.

The issue also affects supply to York Castle High, Browns Town High and several primary schools.

This latest act of vandalism follows a similar incident earlier this month at the New Ground Facility, which also resulted in significant damage and disruption.

The NWC says the frequency of these incidents suggest a deliberate scheme to disrupt the water supply in St Ann, putting the health, safety, and well-being of residents at risk.

It says it is working closely with law enforcement to apprehend those responsible.

The Commission is also urging customers to report any suspicious activity around its facilities to help prevent further incidents.

To report information or suspicious activity, persons can contact the NWC at Toll Free: 888-225-5692 or email its Security Department via: customercare@nwc.com.jm or public.relations@nwc.com.jm

Perpetrators can face fines for trespassing on the works of the National Water Commission under the law, and may also be subject to criminal charges.
