Like his father Derrick, Duane Smith, is to represent the St Andrew North Western constituency after victory in today's by-election.

Smith, who represented the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, received 1,863 votes to independent candidate Carl Marshall's 111, a margin of 94.4%.

Marshall was a former MP and Speaker of the House.

With the win, Smith replaces Dr Nigel Clarke who resigned recently to take up a deputy managing director post at the International Monetary Fund.

Some 31,729 registered voters were eligible to cast their ballots in today's by-election, which had a turnout of 6.2%.
