Biomedical lab enhances cybersecurity following data breach
Biomedical Caledonia Medical Laboratory Limited says it has strengthened its cybersecurity and IT infrastructure following a data breach.
News emerged today that the data of numerous Biomedical customers were stolen by cybercriminals.
Acknowledging customers' concerns, the company, in a statement this evening, indicated that it is doing everything possible to protect their data and maintain trust.
It did not disclose the specific types of data that were stolen.
Reports indicate that hackers have stolen and published thousands of medical files.
Biomedical confirmed that it was the target of what it described as “unauthorised access,” which occurred in November 2024.
The company stated that its investigation so far has revealed that the breach resulted from unauthorised access to its network and systems through an external vendor.
“We are still investigating the extent of the breach and have been informing our stakeholders, including doctors and clients (patients),” the company said.
Biomedical added that upon discovering the breach, it immediately took the necessary steps to prevent further unauthorised access. It also engaged a certified cybersecurity and forensic investigator, along with a team of cybersecurity specialists, to address the issue.
All relevant government agencies and law enforcement authorities were promptly notified, the company stated.
In response to the incident, Biomedical has selected a new managed services provider, implemented enhanced security measures, upgraded its entire IT infrastructure, deployed a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system, and installed Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), among other actions.
“These measures have strengthened our security posture. We have also revised protocols for vendor relationships and bolstered our internal security policies,” the company stated.
Biomedical says it deeply regret the incident and that it remains remain focused on completing its investigation and communicating with stakeholders who may have been impacted.
