An early morning fire at the Brunswick Early Childhood Development Centre in Spanish Town, St Catherine, has resulted in the cancellation of classes for more than 100 students at the institution.

It is reported that about 5:30 a.m., fire was observed coming from the building which houses a school and day care centre.

The Spanish Town Fire Department was called and a unit was dispatched to put out the raging fire.

Several classrooms, the library, a storeroom, canteen and other areas were gutted.

When the Brunswick Avenue location was visited by The Gleaner, several students, teachers and community members were observed at the scene.

"This is a great setback for me as my daughter attends the school and on Saturday she stays at the day care while I work," Marvette Binns said.

Among those who gathered was Principal Carol Payne.

"This is a very sad situation," she said.

The fire department is yet to ascertain the cause of the blaze.
