Renowned lawyer Valerie Neita Robertson has died
Firebrand attorney Valerie Neita Robertson, King's Counsel, died on Monday.
The 71-year-old had been ailing for some time.
"She died peacefully surrounded by her family," a statement said.
It added that Neita Robertson will be remembered as "a tireless defence lawyer, a committed advocate for justice, the rule of law, equity, equality before the law, and social justice".
"She can best be described as a fighter," said attorney Linton Gordon, who appeared with her in the Keith Clarke murder trial last year. She was in court up to early October when she got sick.
Neita Robertson was the People's National Party's representative for Portland Western in the 2020 general election.
STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILY
Neita Robertson began her legal career as a junior to the late Honourable Anthony Spaulding and Ian Ramsay, QC.
With 47 years at the Bar, she has made a significant impact as a committed criminal defence attorney in the representation of her clients' interests and rights at all levels of the judicial system. She was appointed to the Inner Bar as Queen’s Counsel in 2016.
Long before her QC appointment, Neita Robertson was recognised as a leader of the bar and the champion of the people’s cause. She has left an enduring legacy advocating for judicial reform and access to justice for all Jamaicans.
She was well-respected by her peers for her passion, indomitable spirit, resilience, commitment to service and professionalism; all geared towards seeking a just and equitable outcome for the indigent and voiceless.
In addition to her legal prowess, Neita Robertson’s commitment to her country and social justice led to her entering representational politics.
She was a committed member of the People’s National Party and served in several capacities including
councillor for the Papine Division of Eastern St Andrew in 1986; legal advisor to the party, member of the campaign team; and campaign manager in West Rural St Andrew, West Portland, East Rural St Andrew, and Western St Mary. She was also the PNP candidate for West Portland in the 2020 general election.
Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, particularly her four sons, siblings, other family members, friends and other loved ones, on which she has made a lasting impact.
