Major upgrades coming for six post offices
Major renovation work is to be done on six post offices and minor upgrades at 15 others during the upcoming fiscal year, the Ministry of Finance has announced.
The 2025/26 fiscal year begins on April 1.
The six post offices are St Ann’s Bay, in St Ann; Negril, in Westmoreland; Montego Bay, in St James; and Sandy Bay, in Clarendon; as well as Stony Hill and Half-Way Tree in St Andrew.
The 15 post offices slated for minor improvements were not disclosed.
Finance Minister Fayval Williams made the announcements on Thursday as the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament began reviewing the Budget for the 2025/26 fiscal year.
Approximately $3.5 billion has been allocated to the postal service for the upcoming financial year, she disclosed.
Williams was responding to Opposition Member of Parliament Anthony Hylton, who questioned what he called the “consistent” allocation of almost the same amount “for the last few years”.
“Could I get an update on what is being pursued under that heading, and what activities are being pursued?” Hylton questioned.
Williams, in her response, revealed that in the last fiscal year, major renovations were done at five post offices.
Fifteen other facilities also saw minor improvement works last year, she said.
