One of two men fatally shot by police in St James Wednesday afternoon is believed to have been a person of interest in the shooting of two cops at a supermarket in Montego Bay on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as 23-year-old Joshua Tyrell of Go Peace Lane, Salt Spring, in the parish.

Reports indicate that Tyrell was killed during a confrontation with the police. When the gunfire subsided, he was reportedly found clutching a 9mm Glock pistol (serial number AAMC288) with a magazine containing two rounds of ammunition.

Tyrell was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to highly placed police sources, Tyrell was believed to be one of two alleged gunmen who opened fire on officers responding to an attempted robbery at a supermarket on Church Street, downtown Montego Bay, on Tuesday night.

It's alleged that the police encountered two armed men inside the supermarket, one wielding a handgun and the other a rifle.

The men fled the premises, and as they attempted to escape, the gunman carrying the rifle opened fire on the police, causing the driver of the squad car to crash into a parked vehicle.

The suspects then ran onto St James Street, where they were confronted by another group of police officers. Once again, they opened fire, hitting two officers, one sustaining gunshot wounds to both legs and the other being shot in the shoulder. The men managed to escape on foot.

In a separate incident earlier Wednesday afternoon, 52-year-old Andrew Maurice White was shot and killed in the Albion Lane community.

According to police reports, White was seen standing at a gateway with a firearm tucked in his waistband. Upon spotting the police, he allegedly ran into a yard. Officers gave chase, during which White reportedly opened fire.

Both incidents are under investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations.
