People’s National Party (PNP) general secretary, Dr Dayton Campbell, has expressed shock at the death of Dr Rohan Williams, who served as councillor for the Ocho Rios division from 2012 to 2016.

Williams, 57, reportedly died Sunday evening at a hospital in Washington DC in the United States, after battling cancer for the last four years.

“The passing of Dr Williams came as a shocking surprise last evening when we were told of his untimely departure,” Campbell told The Gleaner on Monday.

“Dr Williams was a respected member of the medical fraternity serving the people of St Ann, especially in the Ocho Rios and St Ann’s Bay areas and he served a term as councillor for the Ocho Rios division,” the general secretary added.

“We want to at this time express condolences to family and immediate friends and to the wider PNP family. A good man has transitioned. We hope that he will rest in power. The angels will carry him home," he said.

In the March 2012 parish council elections, Williams defeated Kenroy Dixon of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), with 1,677 to 1,317 votes, to become the councillor for the Ocho Rios division.

His attempt at re-election in November 2016 was thwarted by the JLP’s Michael Belnavis who triumphed with 1665 votes to Williams’ reduced number of 985.
