Procurement starts for repairs to historic Albert George Market
Mayor of Falmouth Collen Gager has disclosed that the procurement process has started for the long-awaited repairs to the Albert George Market in Water Square in the town.
He said the repairs will also include the historic clock, which has not ticked for years.
"The market had fallen into a state of disrepair. Funding has been identified. Our plans include repairs to the roof and shops. Shops which are now closed will reopen and offer a variety of services. An example will be a shop with a tailor who can do a quick repair job," Gager said.
"There has been discussions surrounding what is to done with the clock. It will definitely not be digital. That would change the heritage of the market and the town. The estimate for the clock repair is $250,000," he said.
In December 2024, several residents of Trelawny took the nation’s political and other leaders to task for failing to deliver on numerous promises, including one to renovate the market.
This after Gager said in 2022 that the historic market was set to receive a multimillion dollar upgrade in 2023.
"The present state of the market is undesirable for such a heritage icon in Falmouth. The roof leaks and in some places tarpaulin is used to keep out rainfall. The clock has not worked for many years," Gager said at the time.
