Fiery roadblocks in Grants Pen over fatal police shooting, INDECOM probing three separate incidents
Residents of Grants Pen in St Andrew today mounted fiery roadblocks to protest the fatal shooting of a man by the police during an alleged confrontation in the community this morning.
They have accused the police of wrongdoing.
The shooting is being investigated by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
The deceased has been identified as Jadean Gooden, otherwise called ‘Six'.
INDECOM says the police reported that a team visited a premises and a man was seen with a firearm, which was allegedly pointed at the police.
The cops took evasive action, and the man was shot.
A firearm was reported as being recovered at the scene.
Meanwhile, INDECOM says it is probing two other fatal police shootings, one in Jerusalem Mountain, Westmoreland, which occurred today, and another in Old Harbour, St Catherine, which happened on Tuesday.
The deceased in the Old Harbour incident has been identified as Shaquille Johnson, while the identity of the man from Westmoreland is yet to be ascertained.
According to INDECOM, in the Old Harbour incident, the police reported that they visited a premises and a man was seen with a firearm, which was allegedly pointed at the police.
At least one officer is reported as firing and a gun was reported as recovered from the deceased.
The details of the circumstances of the police fatal shooting in Westmoreland are still being ascertained by the INDECOM team.
The scene in Old Harbour was examined and evidential material was recovered, processed, and packaged, said INDECOM.
The hands of the deceased were swabbed for gunshot residue, and the body photographed and sealed, pending post-mortem examination.
Similar processing is now under way by the INDECOM teams at the Grants Pen and the Jerusalem Mountain shootings.
INDECOM says in all three incidents no body-worn cameras were reported as being worn by any of the concerned officers.
The concerned officers in the three separate incidents have been served with notices to submit statements and attend interviews.
INDECOM stated that these latest incidents have increased the tally of fatal shootings by the security forces to 133, of which 22 occurred during May.
Some 189 persons were fatally shot by the security force in 2024.
