Holness, Grange pay tribute to Leroy Gibbons

Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness says Leroy Gibbons' death is a great loss to Jamaica's cultural landscape.

The veteran lover's rock singer, whose real name is Leroy Gibbon, reportedly died earlier today in Lucea, Hanover. He was 74 years old.

In a post on social media platform X, Holness said Gibbons was a cherished son of Jamaica whose voice helped shape the golden era of reggae and lovers rock.

"His smooth vocals and heartfelt lyrics made him a standout talent, and his contribution to reggae music remains invaluable. Leroy's passing is a great loss to our cultural landscape, but his music will continue to live on, reminding us of the beauty, soul, and emotion that reggae brings to the world," Holness said.

"On behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, I extend my deepest sympathies. May his soul rest in eternal peace," he continued.

Meanwhile, Minister of Culture and Entertainment Olivia Grange said Gibbons' contributions to the music industry are undeniable.

She said his unique voice and style have left a lasting impact on fans worldwide.

“I am glad that I got the opportunity to see him at Rebel Salute 2025 where gave an electrifying performance, captivating his audience," she stated.

“I will continue to support his family during this most difficult time. I express my deepest sympathy to them, to his friends and associates to the music fraternity," she added.
