Five people have been confirmed dead “so far” in an early-morning motor vehicle crash in Trelawny on Sunday, a police report has revealed.

The names of the victims were not released.

The crash occurred along the North Coast Highway and involved a Toyota bus.

“Horrific! One of the worse multiple fatality crashes in recent times,” said Dr Lucien Jones, vice chairman of the National Road Safety Council.

The police report listed excessive speeding, inattention/diverted attention and failure “to keep to the near side/proper traffic lane” as possible causes of the crash.

A total of 194 people have died in 170 fatal crashes in Jamaica since January 1, this year, according to the latest police data.

Deaths are down four per cent while fatal crashes are down three per cent when compared with the corresponding period last year.
