PNP ready to take back Kingston Central with Steve McGregor, says party supporter
The main opposition People’s National Party (PNP) lost the Kingston Central constituency in the 2020 general election because of the “disarray” and disorganisation within its ranks and the wider party, a supporter has asserted.
But Anthony Woodbine, 63, believes the result will be different this time around and predicted a victory for PNP candidate Steve McGregor, though he opined that the contest will be “very close”.
McGregor was officially nominated at 11:45 a.m. at Covenant of Mercy Alpha Academy.
He paid the $15,000 fee with $500 notes.
Woodbine was one of the 10 electors who nominated McGregor.
The PNP has held Kingston Central for decades before the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Donovan Williams pulled off a surprise victory in the September 2020 polls.
Williams is scheduled to be nominated this afternoon.
Woodbine believes Williams’ victory was aided by the disunity in the PNP.
“There was some disarray in the party, well, both party and constituency. Everybody was not together in agreement on some things and that put us in a position where some of us didn’t turn out,” Woodbine said.
However, he said all that is behind them and credited PNP President Mark Golding for the turnaround.
“His leadership is full of fun and integrity, more organised and there is more peace.”
Woodbine said the PNP should easily win the constituency, but cautioned that the JLP “is full of tricks”.
“The younger youths; you can buy them out easy ‘cause a money dem a deal wid, dem nah deal with policy,” he said.
