Today’s traffic congestion in Frankfield could not stop Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate for Clarendon North Western, Warren Newby, from securing his nomination as he presses to win the seat.

The traffic build-up occurred as supporters of the People’s National Party’s (PNP) candidate, Richard Azan, attempted to leave the area following his noon nomination.

Newby was scheduled to be nominated at 1:00 p.m.

Newby has accused his opponent of orchestrating the situation, claiming that it was a deliberate ploy to hinder his nomination.

"His attempt today to use his vehicles to block my nomination is a sign of the desperation that has overcome him since I've come to North West Clarendon," Newby told journalists following his nomination at 1:45 p.m.

When asked whether he had concerns about being judged by the performance of his predecessor, Phillip Henriques — whom constituents have criticised for underperformance — Newby was brief but firm.

"Newby is on the ballot," he declared, appearing undaunted and confident that he would be assessed on his own merit rather than by association with his fellow labourite.

The JLP candidate further expressed confidence in securing victory at the polls on September 3, pointing to several initiatives he said he has personally undertaken in the constituency over the past few months.

"I've been demonstrating to the people through various projects. I've been using cement and marl to patch roads, I've bought pipes out of my pocket," Newby explained, adding that he had also overseen repairs to a community centre in the area.

With nomination day behind him, Newby maintains that he is poised for success and is confident of victory when electors go to the polls on September 3.
