The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Office for the Caribbean, in partnership with the Jamaica Teaching Council (JTC) – an agency of the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information (MoESYI) – is set to host two workshops aimed at equipping teachers across Jamaica with the tools and knowledge to effectively use artificial intelligence (AI) in their classrooms.

The workshops, scheduled for October 10 to 17, 2025, in Montego Bay and Kingston, will bring together 400 teachers, school leaders, and other education stakeholders to explore how AI can transform their classrooms and school ecosystems.

These workshops come at a pivotal time. AI is reshaping the world of education. By equipping Jamaica’s teachers with the skills, tools, and frameworks to navigate this new landscape, we are preparing classrooms for the future, the ministry said. This also enhances teacher engagement by reducing administrative burdens and creating more space for creativity, collaboration, and meaningful interaction with students. Guided by the UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers – a globally recognised standard for integrating AI in education – the training will help teachers apply AI to improve learning outcomes while ensuring responsible and ethical use.

The initiative is part of the national Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Joint Programme on Digital Transformation for Education in Jamaica, funded by the European Union and Spain.

The AI in Education Workshops reflect UNESCO’s commitment to supporting Jamaica’s National Digital Transformation Agenda and the MoESYI’s efforts to ensure that teachers are at the heart of innovation in learning, the ministry said in a statement.

At the workshops, to be held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre and at the AC Hotel respectively, teachers will have the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of AI and its relevance to the Jamaican education system.

They will also examine key ethical considerations, including data privacy, equity, and academic integrity. Participants will experiment with AI tools that can improve lesson delivery, student assessment, and classroom engagement. Teachers will develop personalised action plans for integrating AI in their schools over the next three months.
