MOE sets up committee on schools reopening and Hurricane Melissa
Education Minister Dr Dana Morris Dixon says a committee has been established within the Ministry on the impact of Hurricane Melissa on schools and the reopening of institutions.
Morris Dixon says discussions will be held with key stakeholders tomorrow on the matter, stressing that the Government wants to get children back into schools as quickly as possible to prevent learning losses, as happened during the COVID-19 pandemic.
She says she has toured several schools affected by the hurricane, noting that many are badly damaged.
She commended teachers and other school employees who are working to repair damage to schools.
Last week, the education minister stated that schools that can reopen following the storm should do so starting today, November 3.
Morris Dixon, speaking at a special hurricane press briefing at Jamaica House today, said the decision to reopen schools has been decentralised and is being left to principals and school boards.
Morris Dixon says the Government wants the best for children, stressing that this is not the time for politics.
