Two St Mary policemen charged for allegedly assaulting handcuffed man at station, granted $200,000 bail
Two St Mary policemen have been charged for allegedly assaulting a man while he was handcuffed at the Highgate Police Station.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is reporting that Corporal Garth Brown and Constable Shaquille Murphy were charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and placed before the St Mary Parish Court on Thursday.
The cops were each granted $200,000 bail.
INDECOM says the incident occurred on September 1, 2023, at the police station.
According to the oversight body, during the investigation, the policemen denied assaulting the man; however, medical evidence and an eyewitness corroborated the complainant’s account.
The allegation is that the complainant was hit in the face by the officers while handcuffed at the police station.
He was subsequently granted bail and sought medical attention.
Following an investigation by INDECOM, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that Brown and Murphy should be charged.
