Custos of St James, Bishop Conrad Pitkin, has called on Jamaicans to embrace compassion, justice, and service this Christmas, reminding them that the birth of Christ remains a source of “great joy for all the people” and a guiding light for national life.

In his Christmas message, anchored in Luke 2:10–11, Pitkin pointed to the angel’s proclamation to the shepherds as a timeless assurance of hope and salvation.

“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord,’” the Custos quoted.

Describing the season as one of gratitude and reflection, Pitkin said it was his “joy and privilege to extend warm Christmas greetings to each of you and your families,” noting that Christmas continues to remind Jamaicans of “the importance of compassion, service, and the enduring values that guide us as a people.”

He underscored that the season also carries a deeper call to ethical living and public responsibility.

“Christmas is a time to reflect on the true meaning of justice, fairness, and integrity, as we serve in our everyday duties,” Pitkin said. “Your commitment to the well-being of others is a testament to your unwavering dedication to God, family, and country.”

The custos offered prayers for peace and renewal, particularly as communities navigate ongoing social and economic challenges, urging citizens to allow faith to translate into action.

“May this Christmas season bring joy and peace to your homes, and may the coming year inspire continued strength,” he said, adding, “May I also implore you to share the hope, the joy, and the healing that Christ offers.”

Pitkin further reminded Jamaicans that public service and community involvement play a critical role in shaping the nation’s moral compass.

“Let us be reminded that through our service, we contribute to building a just and compassionate society, where the light of righteousness shines brightly,” he said.

Concluding his message with a prayerful charge, the Custos expressed hope that the spiritual essence of the season would guide Jamaicans beyond Christmas Day.

“I pray that the true spirit of Christmas shines in your hearts and illuminates your paths,” Pitkin said.

As custos, Pitkin play a leading role in civic life, faith-based engagement, and the promotion of national values across the parish.
