The Department of Correctional Services has pulled its press release issued yesterday regarding complaints raised by an attorney about the alleged undermining of the rights of clients who are in custody.
The department has not explained why the release was recalled, nor has it indicated if an updated statement will be issued on the matter.
At least one attorney in the anti-gang case involving alleged Clansman leader Tesha Miller and 24 co-accused has raised concern about operations at correctional facilities.
In court on Wednesday, defence attorney John Clarke raised the issue of lawyers allegedly being prohibited from taking electronic devices into correctional facilities, noting that some inmates have been unable to view digital disclosures despite court-issued letters intended to facilitate access.
He told the court that he was informed at one facility that while medical professionals are trusted to take in their devices, the same does not apply to lawyers.
