The Transport Authority says it will start motor vehicle examinations on Monday in preparation for the renewal of public passenger vehicle (PPV) road licences, which expire on March 31, 2026.

The examinations are intended to facilitate the timely submission of road licence applications when the 2026/27 road licensing period officially opens on February 1.

Managing Director of the Transport Authority, Ralston Smith, said the early start is part of efforts to improve convenience and efficiency for customers.

He is also urging operators to make use of the Authority’s online licensing system, which allows payments via bank transfer or Visa debit and credit cards.

"Smith is also reminding PPV Operators and new applicants that they must meet the approved Transport Authority standards and requirements in order to receive a road licence," said a statement from the authority on Sunday.

The requirements include colour coding, proper exterior markings, and updated vehicle documents accessible through the Island Traffic Authority and Tax Administration Jamaica portals.

Smith is encouraging operators to complete their applications early to avoid prosecution for failing to renew their licences.

Applications submitted after March 31 will attract a late fee.
