Man held after allegedly threatening and assaulting policeman in Spanish Town

A 39-year-old man is in police custody after he allegedly threatened and assaulted a police officer during an incident along Burke Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine on Saturday.

The suspect is being held in connection with charges of threatening, assaulting the police, assault at common law, and breaches of the Firearms Act. The police have withheld his identity pending further investigations.

According to police reports, at about 9:40 a.m. yesterday, a police officer was on duty in the area when he approached a bus stop near the Shoppers Fair supermarket.

The suspect reportedly uttered a threat, saying, “memba me know yu and mi must kill yu police bwoy,” before he was accosted by the officer.

Police say the officer attempted to apprehend the man while pointing out the offence, but the suspect allegedly held the officer’s Glock pistol.

A struggle ensued, during which both men fell to the roadway and a round was discharged.

The officer reportedly regained control of the firearm after it was pointed at him by the suspect.

The officer was assisted by other police personnel, and the suspect was eventually arrested and taken into custody.
