The National Works Agency (NWA) says it is prioritising the most dangerous of 16 breakaways identified in Trelawny Southern.

Stephen Shaw, manager of communications at the NWA, said limited funding means the agency must focus on sites posing the greatest risk to motorists.

“We are not going to get funding to treat all of them, so we have to focus on those which pose immediate danger to the travelling public,” Shaw said.

He said the breakaways stretch from Highgate Hall to Sawyers.

Shaw added that while Trelawny Southern has historically experienced breakaways, about 90 per cent of the current damage resulted from Hurricane Melissa.

Meanwhile, Winston Smith, councillor for the Lorrimers Division, welcomed the NWA’s assessment and urged swift intervention.

“They cannot start working too soon. There are three dangerously poised ones - one in Sill Sides, one in Wait-A-Bit, and another in Stettin. I hope those get priority treatment,” Smith said.
