Boy in custody over security incidents at high schools in Portland
A boy has been taken into police custody in Portland in connection with the security incidents that disrupted classes at two high schools in the parish.
He was picked up today.
Commanding officer for the Portland Police Division, Superintendent Ainsley McCarthy, said investigators followed strong leads from the first incident, which led to the apprehension of the minor.
“We had personnel from C-TOC [Counter Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch] come in to conduct a thorough search of Port Antonio High School on Friday. We were able to determine who was responsible for these incidents. It then became a matter of locating the individual, and based on Monday’s threat and security breach, we realised it followed the same pattern,” McCarthy said.
“We treated both incidents as a priority, as the lives of the entire school population were at risk,” he added.
Classes at Portland High School were suspended today due to a security issue.
The incident came days after classes were disrupted at nearby Port Antonio High School following a similar security threat last Friday.
