A 10,000-square-foot medical dome capable of housing up to 100 beds is expected to arrive in Jamaica by the end of February to ease pressure at Cornwall Regional Hospital, which remains under strain following damage caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The facility will include beds, X-ray systems, autoclaves, and other medical equipment, all provided at no cost.

Designed to withstand Category Four hurricanes, the dome will be located near the A&E Department to support faster patient transfers.

The ballistic-rated structure, being donated by international NGOs Judah One and Kennedy International Logistics and Services, will be flown into Jamaica and permanently handed over to the public health system.

Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton, speaking during a press briefing on Saturday at the offices of the Western Regional Health Authority in Montego Bay, St James, said the dome will significantly improve patient flow and relieve congestion in the Accident and Emergency Department while permanent repairs continue.

Judah One CEO Everett Aaron said the decision was taken after seeing conditions at Cornwall Regional Hospital first-hand.

“This is not a short-term fix. We are donating the dome 100 per cent to the people of Jamaica,” he said.
