Kevin Richards, the newly installed chief commissioner of the Scout Association of Jamaica, says the movement must confront growing challenges impacting young people while building on the legacy of those who previously led the organisation.

Speaking recently during his installation ceremony at King’s House in St Andrew, Richards reflected on the responsibility of leading the movement at a time when youths are increasingly exposed to negative influences.

“These are tough times; the wrong influences are now at the fingertips of our young people, threatening to pull them away from the values we hold dear. This is our challenge. We must grow, expand, and reach more youngsters across Jamaica,” said Richards.

He credited the leaders who came before him for preparing the foundation on which he now stands, acknowledging their mentorship and example.

“To my predecessors, who have carried the torch with honour and integrity, I extend my heartfelt gratitude,” Richards said. “You have shaped me, challenged me, and prepared me to lead at such a time as this.”

Richards, who has replaced Garth Russell, who served the association for the past six years, also urged Scout leaders across the island to respond to the changing landscape by strengthening programmes and embracing innovation while preserving the movement’s core values.

“Let us not be content with what we have achieved,” said Richards. “Let us push forward with renewed energy. Let us modernise our movement, strengthen our programmes, and embrace innovation while staying true to our core values.”

Richards also paid tribute to Governor General Patrick Allen, who has been the chief scout of Jamaica for the past 17 years, describing his leadership and vision as an inspiration.

Despite the challenges that the organisation continues to face, Richards expressed confidence in the role the Scout movement can play in shaping Jamaica’s future.

“Let us rise to this moment. Let us lead with courage, and let us guide our youngsters on to the right path, because the future of Jamaica depends on it,” he said.
