A 58-year-old farmer has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for the rape of a teenage girl at his home in St Catherine 11 years ago.

The sentence was handed down on Friday in the St Catherine Circuit Court by Dale Palmer, who ruled that the accused must serve 10 years before becoming eligible for parole.

The court heard that on February 11, 2015, the man, who was a family friend and neighbour, lured the then 15-year-old complainant to his home under the pretext of wanting to “show” her something.

Once inside, he overpowered the teenager, who was ill at the time, and raped her.

The complainant reported the incident to her brother shortly after, and the matter was subsequently reported to the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

An investigation was launched, during which DNA samples were collected.

The accused was later charged with rape by the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse.
