Minister with responsibility for Works, Robert Nesta Morgan, has instructed the National Works Agency (NWA) to take immediate steps to mitigate flooding in the town of Lucea, Hanover.

This comes after persistent rainfall over the last 24 hours resulted in the Riley River overflowing onto the main road leading into and out of the parish capital.

The NWA indicated that, based on checks by its technical team, heavy deposits of bamboo in front of and beneath the bridge were a major contributor to the flooding.

The agency said it would move immediately to have the area in the vicinity of the bridge cleared of the debris.

The NWA stated that the impediments would be removed as quickly as possible without endangering lives.

Sections of western parishes, including Hanover, have been experiencing heavy rainfall over the last week.

The NWA stated that the rains have also caused damage to infrastructure in the parish, noting that a section of the main road from Green Island to Glasgow collapsed on Thursday night during heavy rainfall.

As a result of the collapsed roadway, motorists are unable to traverse the road through the community of Kendal.

Morgan has also directed the NWA to review the situation along the corridor with a view to carrying out temporary work to facilitate its reopening.

This is against the background of challenges being experienced by residents who now have to take the much longer route through Riley, Kingsvale, and Prospect.
