A man was fatally shot during an alleged confrontation with police following a reported hijacking of a taxi along Camp Road in Kingston on Wednesday evening.

The incident occurred about 6:20 p.m.

The Gleaner understands that the man had boarded the taxi posing as a passenger.

During the journey, the taxi operator reportedly stopped to pick up a woman, but the man allegedly objected and, during the ensuing interaction, revealed a firearm.

The taxi driver reportedly placed the vehicle in neutral and exited before alerting a passing police team.

The armed man then allegedly took control of the vehicle and drove away, prompting a police pursuit.

The motor vehicle subsequently crashed into a tree along the roadway.

A shoot-out reportedly ensued, during which the man was shot and killed.

According to the police, a firearm was recovered following the incident.

The Independent Commission of Investigations has been notified and is expected to probe the fatal shooting.

The incident marks the first person fatally shot by police in June.

As of June 3, a total of 139 people have been fatally shot by members of the security forces since the start of the year.
