Gov’t to undertake programme to target trauma, violence in Hurricane Melissa-affected areas

The Government is to provide greater psychosocial support to families in several Hurricane Melissa-affected communities amid increasing psychological trauma, domestic violence and interpersonal conflict.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Security Council, which is chaired by Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness.

The meeting was held last Thursday.

A government statement said the council reviewed evidence of increasing psychological trauma, domestic violence and interpersonal conflict in several Hurricane Melissa-affected communities.

The statement did not provide specific details.

The Government indicated that the council approved the development of a coordinated national programme to expand trauma counselling, community mental health services, family intervention programmes and violence prevention initiatives in the most affected areas.

Holness said the Government remains committed to supporting families that are still recovering.

“Recovery is not measured only by the number of homes rebuilt or roads repaired. We must also heal the invisible wounds left by disaster. Addressing trauma is essential to restoring families, strengthening communities and preventing violence from taking root in the aftermath of crisis.”
