Classes were suspended on Friday at some schools in Portland due to the inclement weather affecting Jamaica.

Among the affected schools was Port Antonio Primary School.

“We had to postpone heritage activities planned, including a march and concert. We dismissed at 12 noon,” said the school’s principal Kennicha Davis.

Port Antonio Primary is located in the low-lying, flood-prone area of Prospect, a community that is vulnerable to flooding, especially during heavy and persistent rainfall.

Meanwhile, a senior teacher at Boundbrook Primary School, who asked not to be named, told The Gleaner that classes were suspended for students on shift one, but students on the afternoon shift had been turning up for school.

The senior teacher also urged students who might still be at home to remain indoors, as the rains were continuing.

Additionally, the teacher said that, based on the turnout for the afternoon shift, classes would be held for the time being, with the intention of sending students home early, before the normal 4:45 p.m. closing time.

Over at Port Antonio High School, classes were suspended for the morning shift early on Friday.

However, students on the afternoon shift were being accommodated.
