From pandemic challenges to expansion
Shipco Jamaica marks fifth anniversary
WHEN SHIPCO Jamaica launched five years ago, it entered a competitive market with a bold promise to raise the bar for logistics across the Caribbean. In a region where demand for reliable shipping services was accelerating, the company quickly positioned itself as a key player.
Now marking its fifth anniversary, Shipco Jamaica is a demonstration of what vision, agility, and grit can achieve, even in the face of a pandemic. The company has not only weathered the turbulence of COVID-19, but has also expanded its operations and solidified its reputation for dependability and innovation in the logistics space.
Established in 1988 as a subsidiary of Denmark-based Scan-Group, Shipco Transport is a neutral non-vessel operating common carrier (NVOCC) headquartered in Chatham, New Jersey. With more than 90 offices in over 30 countries, Shipco offers Less-Than-Container Load (LCL), Full Container Load (FCL), and airfreight services worldwide. The company is a founding member of the WorldWide Alliance and the AirCargoGroup and is known for its strong digital tools and consistent service across markets.
The decision to extend operations into the Caribbean was a strategic move to tap into the region’s growing demand for streamlined logistics solutions. According to Rachel Matthews, Caribbean general manager of ShipcoTransport, the company set out with a clear goal to build a strong regional presence offering sea and air freight services, all backed by Shipco’s extensive global network.
Reflecting on the early days, Matthews said the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant, unforeseen challenges. Yet, the team remained focused on maintaining reliable service. She noted that by leveraging alternative routes and relying on strong partnerships, they were able to minimise disruptions and continue supporting customers during an especially difficult period.
Since its inception, Shipco Jamaica has grown from a two-person operation to a dedicated team of eight. Matthews attributes this growth to the company’s emphasis on technology and process efficiency. She said that while the team remains small and agile, its focus on innovation has allowed the company to scale its services and strengthen its reputation both in Jamaica and across the region.
Reliability remains one of the company’s defining traits. Matthews credits much of this to Shipco’s global and regional partnerships, which enable consistent shipping routes and timely deliveries. She also underscores the importance of proactive communication, noting that the team works hard to keep customers informed and provide timely solutions when issues arise.
At the core of Shipco Jamaica’s success, Matthews said, is a positive and flexible work culture. The company is committed to creating a supportive environment where employees can thrive. She pointed to frequent staff feedback that highlights opportunities for growth, whether through promotions or transfers to international offices, as a hallmark of the company’s culture. She shared that they are regularly encouraged to participate in local charity events and clean-up initiatives, something they embrace with enthusiasm.
Looking ahead, Shipco Jamaica is mapping a path for further growth, with plans to expand its LCL service coverage and introduce more direct consolidation routes to key global markets.
