Reid looking to run fast at Champs

Standout St Jago athlete Joanne Reid says she harbours no fears of her Class Three rivals, with the 400m star confident about unleashing fast times at next week's ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships, at the National Stadium.

Though mindful of her challengers, Reid, who recently eclipsed the meet record at the G.C. Foster Classics, is ready to run fast and take that form into Champs.

The athlete set a new mark of 54:49 seconds at the National Stadium.

"I know I can win my class, no fears," she declared ahead of Champs.

"I didn't (go there) to break any records. I just followed my coach's instructions, and it came out a great win, so I am very happy," she said of her run at the G.C. Foster Classic.

HIGHLY ANTICIPATED

Reid lowered the previous mark (54.99) set in 2016 by Sanique Walker of Vere Technical.

Heading into the highly anticipated March 28-April 1 championships, Reid was clear that she could put down a much better time than she has done so far this season.

She also underlined that she is more experienced this year, something she expects will push her to her objectives.

"I can't really say how [much] faster I can get, but I think I can go much faster. I have some very competitive girls going against; they will push me, and so I will run faster," she said. "This year, I am much more experienced, so I understand the race and that I can go much faster."

Athletes who could give Reid - who many consider favourite for gold - a challenge include; Selisa Palmer and Dorian Nelson of Edwin Allen High and Excelsior High respectively. They finished second and third last year when Reid easily won the title in 55.63 seconds.

Meanwhile, Janeille Josephs of St Andrew High and Daniella Deer of Holmwood Technical, could also pose a challenge to the lanky St Jago athlete.

The 16-year-old Class Three 400m record (52.52) set in 2001 is held by former Holmwood Technical star Anneisha McLaughin.

"There are a lot of things to touch up on, but you can expect better from me at Champs," Reid promised.
