HAVING SHATTERED her own regular season scoring record in Australia’s Suncorp Super Netball League, Sunshine Girls’ captain Jhaniele Fowler has turned her attention to another goal, one that has eluded her for a few years.

Fowler really wants to add a league victory to her scoring title after missing out from consecutive final appearances.

Fowler, who is rated the best goal shooter in the world, will lead the West Coast Fever charge into the semi-final of competition against the Melbourne Vixens on Saturday.

The 32-year-old Fowler, who is the league’s reigning Most Valuable Player, having won the accolade for the fourth time in a row last year, has lost in the final twice by just three goals.

“I am really looking forward to the semi-final and final because I have been in the finals twice, and I have lost out in both of them,” said Fowler.

“I am excited and hungry because I want to win it,” she said.

“I am putting it out in the universe that we are going to win it because we have been playing really well this season, and we have what it takes to go all the way,” Fowler said.

The former Mico College player eclipsed her regular scoring record of 795 goals, which she set in 2020, on Saturday against the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

Fowler scored 44 of 45 attempts to lead the Fever to a 68-57 victory and to a new record of 804 goals from 833 attempts. National teammate Shimona Nelson finished a distant second on the scoring table with 710 goals.

According to Fowler, she has worked really hard on improving the weak areas of her game, and the new scoring record is a testament to that fact.

ANOTHER LEVEL

“It just feels like I have accomplished another level to my game, and it has moved me to another level as a professional,” Fowler said.

“I think that the number of shots that I have been able to put up this season has been incredible, and so getting this record wasn’t much of a surprise to me,” she said.

Fowler, who also finished the season as the top offensive rebounder with 46, noted that she is hoping that her performance this year will land her a fifth straight MVP award in the competition.

“You never know because anything is possible, and I am trying to do better than I did last year, and so hopefully, that will speak for itself,” she said.

“I thought this season was a big learning season for me because I have gained so much more experience throughout the year, so it has been a really good season for me personally.”
