Walker Cup champions St Catherine High held last season’s beaten finalists, Jamaica College (JC), to a 0-0 draw in their Group A ISSA-Manning Cup match at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

St Catherine dominated the game for the first hour and had only themselves to blame for not going ahead.

Although St Catherine’s coach, Anthony Patrick, thought his team was wasteful, he believes it was a deserved point for both teams.

“The first half we pushed JC back a whole lot. We really played well and we should have got the go-ahead goal.

“Early in the second half, JC took charge and in the latter parts we started to play again and overall it was a good game. The points were shared and I am satisfied with that,” he said.

In the first half, the hosts mounted numerous attacks against the JC defence but failed to really test Richardo White in goal. After the break, JC wrestled control from the home team and created some really good chances but good goalkeeping from Omarion Brown as well as poor finishing from Raul Renton, J’havier Lynch and Maquan Aldridge kept them scoreless.

St Catherine regained their momentum towards the end of match and their best chances fell to Jacque Watson and Rasheen McKenzie.

JC’s Davian Ferguson admitted it wasn’t the best display from the Old Hope Road-based school but contends that they are still finding their feet as a team.

“St Catherine are no simple team. We respect them. We knew they would have come hard playing at home.

“But we never had that punch or braveness in possession. That gave them confidence and the momentum swung back and forth. Second half, we controlled the game and had a bit more purpose but we didn’t create enough clear-cut chances to win the game.

“But it is early days, our second game of the round, so we still haven’t played most of these players together and we are still finding our feet,” he said.

St Jago lead the group with maximum six points, followed by JC and St Catherine on four each and Holy Trinity on three.

In other games, St Jago defeated St Mary’s College 5-1, Holy Trinity stopped Cedar Grove 1-0, Camperdown and Papine drew 1-1, Mona beat Hydel 3-1 and Wolmer’s Boy stopped Kingston High 2-0.
