Western Bureau:

FOUR GOALS from Leo Campbell led Irwin High School to a 5-1 win over Anchovy High School in the first of game of a Zone A Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) daCosta Cup football doubleheader at Cornwall College playing field yesterday.

Irwin took the lead nine minutes into the game through Fabian Grey before Campbell stole the show.

Irwin’s talisman took a while to get into the game after a somewhat sloppy start by his standards but came alive with his first goal four minutes before halftime to give his team a 2-0 lead at the break.

Campbell ruled the second half, netting his second goal in the 54th minute before completing a hat trick in the 74th.

Oneil Irving pulled a goal back for Anchovy a minute later, but that was little consolation with Campbell putting the icing on the cake for the table toppers.

Campbell, who took his goal tally to eight from nine games, said the job was not done yet, despite topping the zone.

“I feel very good. Coach told us to play just like how we put in the work in training and that’s what we did,” said Campbell.

“It’s a big improvement from last year. We knew what we had to do and we want to do the same (win) in the last game. I want to score at least 10 goals in the first round, so I have to play the same way in the last game,” he added.

Coach of Irwin, Norman Foster, heaped praise on his talisman.

“Leo’s performance is always a hundred per cent. He is a player I can count on from day one and he is the same. You could see where he grew into the game and it’s just his experience and maturity coming through. He is one with a bright future, so we have to handle him well,” Foster said.

“From today’s (yesterday) results we are definitely into the next round. However, the most important thing is to finish top of the zone for seeding points so we wouldn’t have too much to worry about in who we will play in the second round,” he added.

In the late game, Cornwall College got a step closer to second-round competition with a narrow 1-0 win over St James High. Braxton Richards’ 49th minute strike decided the contest.

Elsewhere in the zone, Green Pond High School and Maldon played out a 0-0 draw.
