Carifta Trials: Dockery, Card rule in U20 100m
Sabrina Dockery of Lacovia High and Wolmer’s Boys’ Gary Card stole the spotlight on yesterday’s opening day of the three-day Carifta Trials at GC Foster College with impressive wins in the Under-20 100 metres finals.
In a big showdown between the two fastest schoolgirls in the country, Dockery and Douglas delivered a thrilling race that kept the small crowd on the edge of their seats.
Dockery, known for her quick start, got out of the blocks very fast and, despite a late surge from Douglas, held on for the victory, clocking 11.30 seconds. Douglas was second in 11.35 while Abigail Wolfe of Wolmer’s Girls finished third in a season’s best 11.63.
As expected, there were no surprises in the Under-20 Boys’ 100m final. Card, the fastest schoolboy in the country, cruised to an easy victory in 10.21 ahead of Calabar High’s Shaquane Gordon, who clocked 10.36 and his teammate Jamal Stephenson, third in 10.41.
In the Under-17 100m finals, Adora Campbell of St Jago High and Jaydon Collins of Holmwood Technical claimed the female and male titles in contrasting fashion. Campbell dominated her race, winning comfortably in 11.59. In a tight battle for second and third, St Mary High’s Shayon Smith and Ferncourt High’s Rihanna Scott both clocked 11.73 with Smith getting the edge for the silver.
The Under-17 Boys’ final saw Collins display a late burst of speed to take the title in 10.60, ahead of Excelsior’s Michael Graham (10.65). Calabar’s Byron Walker was third in 10.71.
In the field events, Calabar’s Kamari Kennedy delivered the standout performance of the day, launching an impressive 18.82m throw to win the Boys’ Under-17 shot put. Munro College’s Brandon Lawrence (15.32m) and Jamaica College’s Xhaevion Kelly (14.79m) rounded out the podium.
Munro’s Selethel Johnson took the Boys’ Under-17 high jump title after clearing 1.90m, the same height achieved by second-place finisher Nikara Johnson of St Jago.
In the girls’ field events Clarendon College’s Marie Kay Lampart continued her dominance in the shot put, winning the Under-20 title with a throw of 14.60m. Excelsior High’s Kimesha Smith (14.10m) and Gianna Clayton (14.07m) took second and third respectively.
Immaculate Conception High’s Jamie Lee Tulloch reigned supreme in the Under-17 Girls’ shot put, recording a winning throw of 12.27m. Zoeyann Plummer of Excelsior (11.38m) and St Elizabeth Technical’s Davieka Lewis (10.66m) finished second and third respectively.
In the Under-20 Girls’ long jump, St Catherine High’s Rohana Sudlow emerged victorious with a leap of 5.85m. Edwin Allen High’s Ishna James (5.73m) was second while William Knibb’s Cheyenne Cooper secured third with 5.67m.
Yesterday also featured preliminary rounds in the 400m and 1500m events for both male and female athletes, with the finals scheduled for today. Day two of competition begins at 9:30 a.m. today.
