Defending champions Frazsiers Whip will kick off their defence of the rebranded Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) against UWI Women in the first game of a doubleheader at the Anthony Spaulding Complex at 3:30 p.m. today and coach Courtney Dowdy is expecting a tough start against a team he considers to be one of the title favourites.

According to Dowdy they are about 80 per cent prepared for their opening encounter and although the majority of the players are schoolgirls, he expects a positive start.

“We have been looking forward to this competition and this rebranding of the competition will help to lift the teams,” Dowdy said.

The Frazsiers Whip coach said there are many changes to the team which won the league last year.

“We will be looking to see how we well we can defend our title. It is not the same set-up as when we played in the Concacaf tournament. Now it is mostly high school students. We are going into the tournament with a young team,” he said.

Although the team is young, Dowdy pointed out that they still have standout players like Davia Richards, Neville Gaye Able and Destiny Powell and an experienced core.

“We have about eight or nine players that make up the core of our team. For this year we know that Arnett Gardens and UWI will be two formidable opponents. I am looking for UWI to come and play some serious football. We know what they are capable of. We played them in preparation for the Concacaf tournament, so we know that they have good players. We want a positive result and we know UWI will want a positive result, so we are going out to put our best food forward,” he added.
