STS PETER & Paul Preparatory received a much-needed boost that has come on the back of last year’s successes in the Jamaica Independent Schools Association (JISA) competitions.

The school won the JISA Prep School Championships for the first time and claimed a third lien on the Alberga Cup football title last year.

Efforts to retain glory for the upcoming competitions have been aided with a half-million-dollar contribution to their sporting programme from Express Canteen Services Limited, which operates a concessionaire at the Old Hope Road-based institution. And with another instalment of the JISA Prep Champs on the horizon, the school’s principal, Claudia Nugent, expressed gratitude for the support.

“We are extremely grateful to Mr [Ryan] Foster, Express Canteen, for his generous donation to our sports programme,” said Nugent, singling out Express Canteen Services’ chairman.

“Our students have been doing exceptionally well not only in sports, but academics. It is our mission to ensure that all our students maximise on their abilities. We firmly believe in the holistic development of our students,” she continued.

Sts Peter & Paul ended a 50-year drought as they defeated defending champions Mona Preparatory 5-4 on penalties to win the Alberga Cup on Saturday, December 7, last year for the third time. The teams had played to a goalless finish in regulation and extra time.

The school had won the title for the first time in 1969.

This victory followed swiftly on the heels of the GK General Insurance, GK Mutual Funds-sponsored JISA Prep Championships title that was won earlier in 2024.

The school scored 211 points to win ahead of Vaz (158), Our Lady of the Angels (136), St Andrew (134.5), and defending champions Hydel (131.5).

They were led by Donovan Leigh James, who emerged as Champion Boy following wins in the 200 and 400 metres in addition to being part of the gold-medal-winning 4x200m relay quartet.

Foster, who has contributed widely to the development of sports across several institutions, including Hydel High, Convent of Mercy Academy (Alpha), Immaculate Conception, and Mona Preparatory, among others, said Express Canteen was committed to advancing youth through sport.

“Express Canteen is extremely proud of the achievements of Sts Peter & Paul Prep, and we are happy to be their nutritional partners,” he said.

“We continue to believe in youth development through sport, and this donation of $500,000 will go towards their sports programme and their rich history of success,” Foster added.

Prep Champs is generally held around mid-June while the football competitions generally fall within the first semester.
