876 Polo team showcases Jamaican excellence in international match
KINGSTON:
The United Kingdom’s first Jamaican polo squad, 876 Polo Team, demonstrated their world-class skill on Sunday, March 9 in an exhilarating international exhibition match against the combined United States and United Kingdom team at the Kingston Polo Club in Caymanas Estates. The match ended in a exciting 4-4 draw.
The 876 Polo Team, comprising Sekou Torre McDonald, Florito Curti, Shiv Rambarran, and Charles Chambers, established an early lead with Chambers delivering two impressive goals in the opening chukkas. The visiting United Kingdom team, comprising Dale Johnson, Noah Dabney, Natascha Hedegaard, and Luke Clarke, mounted a determined response, with Hedegaard scoring twice to keep the match competitive.
A defining moment came when Hedegaard demonstrated exceptional control, keeping the ball rolling despite aggressive defensive manoeuvres from 876 Polo Team, showcasing the world-class skill that has made her a global competitor.
McDonald, patron and founder of the 876 Polo Team, expressed his pride in the team’s performance: “What we witnessed today represents the mission and future of the 876 Polo Team. The talent displayed by both teams was exceptional, and the atmosphere was electric. 876 Polo Team is committed to elevating this magnificent sport both in the United Kingdom and here on the island, and today’s match proves we’re moving in the right direction. We’re not just building a team, we’re creating a legacy that bridges continents.
“Beyond the competitive aspect, this exchange serves a greater purpose,” added McDonald. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between continents and create opportunities for players to learn from each other’s techniques and traditions. This cultural exchange enriches the sport globally.”
The match featured impressive performances from all 876 Polo Team members, who demonstrated exceptional horsemanship, strategic play, and teamwork throughout the four chukkas. Their skilful defence in the critical final moments ensured they maintained parity with their international opponents.
IMPRESSIVE PLAY
Among the United team, 19-year-old Noah Dabney from Richmond, Virginia made an impression with his play. Despite having been an equestrian since age six, Dabney only transitioned to polo three years ago, making his performance noteworthy for a relative newcomer to the sport.
Hedegaard, who competes all over the world and was making her Jamaican polo debut, acknowledged the quality of the competition and facilities: “Playing in Jamaica for the first time has been an incredible experience. The energy from the crowd and the quality of competition made this a memorable match. The horses were absolutely great – truly world-class. I’m already excited to come back and compete next year.”
The teams have already committed to a follow-up exhibition match scheduled for next year, building on this successful tournament. Kingston Polo Club’s picturesque grounds at Caymanas Estates provided an ideal setting for this international showcase, further exposing Jamaica as a polo tourism destination.
