Montego Bay United (MBU) whipped defending champions Cavalier 3-1 to secure a comfortable win and remain atop of the standings after their Jamaica Premier League clash at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay yesterday.
MBU’s Deonjay Brown scored in the fifth minute to give the league leaders a positive start, and in the 48th MBU doubled their lead through Richardo Ramsey. British native Jahmari Clarke gave MBU their third goal in the 73rd minute to sink the defending champions deeper. Cavalier’s Adrian Reid scored a consolation goal in added time.
The result pushes MBU further ahead on 61 points in standings, while Cavalier remain on 42. Portmore United are fourth on 51 points after a 2-1 loss to Dunbeholden. Chapelton Maroons, after a 2-2 draw with Molynes United, remain seventh on 41 points.
Xavier Gilbert, MBU coach, said he hopes the win will boost team morale.
“It was a massive win for the team because recently, we lost one and drew another game. I am happy for the win and I am sure it will bring back some spirit and confidence among the players.
“Our next game is against Harbour View, and they have been getting some good results. We haven’t beaten them all season and it’s going to be tough for us,” Gilbert said.
Meanwhile, Cavalier coach David Laylor attributed the team’s loss to his team’s slow start.
“The objective was to at least come away with a point, but MBU are good team, one of the better teams in the competition now,” said Laylor.
“However, I just think we didn’t play well enough today against this Montego Bay team,” added the Cavalier coach.
