Denbigh High School and 2024 champions Garvey Maceo played to a 1-1 draw in their daCosta Cup Group Three Clarendon derby at Denbigh yesterday.
Both teams created chances to secure all three points in a keenly contested encounter, but neither side could find the winner.
Denbigh took the lead in the 19th minute when Markland Williams used his pace to outrun two defenders before calmly slotting the ball past the Garvey Maceo goalkeeper.
The hosts carried their 1-0 advantage into the half-time break.
Garvey Maceo, however, pulled level in the 57th minute when Sanjay Duncan rose highest to head home from a corner kick.
Both teams continued to press in search of the go-ahead goal, but neither could make the breakthrough, and they eventually had to settle for a point each.
Garvey Maceo finished the game with 10 players after Theodore Pusey was shown a red card for dangerous play in the closing two minutes.
Garvey Maceo head coach Lester Hibbert was satisfied with the point, particularly with his team playing away from home.
“It is a good result for us playing away, and we could have won, but the heavy conditions due to the rain affected the play. We are encouraged and looking forward to the remaining matches,” Hibbert said.
Denbigh head coach Garfield Carney was also pleased with the point, although he admitted that his team wanted all three.
“Playing at home, we wanted the three points, but getting one point against a good Garvey Maceo team is not a bad result. I must commend the guys for the fight and determination. Although it is a tough group, we are looking forward to coming out of it,” Carney said.
