Dedicated teachers needed

Published:Wednesday | May 5, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Editor, Sir:

Any teacher who is in the teaching profession today should have gone into the profession with the aim to teach and touch the lives of as many children under his/her watch as possible, despite the financial challenges which they have to face. Teachers who strike are not suited for the teaching profession because teaching is a vocation, first and foremost.

A dedicated teacher will have as his/her first aim, to do all in his/her power to ensure that the children he/she is teaching will get the best that the teacher has to offer. The present Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) president seems to be better suited for the trade union movement. It seems as if men of the calibre of Professor the Hon Errol Miller, perhaps the nation's most distinguished teacher/educator and former JTA president, who was known during his tenure at the helm of that organisation as 'the brown bomber', are very hard to find these days.

I am, etc.,
