Frome join ranks of inter-zone qualifiers
Western Bureau:
Former champions Frome Technical High joined the list of qualifiers for the inter-zone round of the 2010 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup rural area schoolboy football competition yesterday afternoon when they defeated two-time champions Herbert Morrison 2-1 to join Rusea's as the Zone B qualifiers.
The Frome team, which entered the game on 12 points and needed a draw to advance ahead of their opponents, got their goals through Norval James and Kenardo Cooper. Kachief James got the consolation goal for Herbert Morrison, who faced a must-win situation, as they had 10 points.
"We came here with one objective, and that was to win this game, and we did just that," said Marvin Quarrie.
35th-minute goal
Frome opened their account in the 35th minute when James (Norval) pounced on a cross before the goal and flicked the ball just wide of the diving goalkeeper and into the far corner, a lead they held until half-time.
In second-half action, Herbert Morrison increased the tempo of their play and were rewarded in the 63rd minute. James (Kachief) unleashed a savage 25-yard shot, which struck the underside of the crossbar and flew into the goal, making the score 1-1.
Frome sealed victory in the 70th minute when Cooper latched on a pass before the goal and nonchalantly backheeled past the goalkeeper, making the final score 2-1.
For the third time running, the Garvey Maceo vs Glenmuir match, which was slated for yesterday morning in a bid to avoid the persistent afternoon showers, was again rained out as the rains came early yesterday. The game is scheduled for today at midday.
The crucial Zone G game between Christiana and Knox College was rescheduled for tomorrow. Manchester have already topped the zone, leaving Spaldings (23), Knox College (20) and Christiana (17) to battle for the group's second inter-zone place.
