THE EDITOR, Sir:

I would like to pay tribute to Dr Lloyd Hunter, who died recently and whose service of thanksgiving was held on October 12 at the St Andrew Parish Church.

Dr Hunter had many achievements in business, such as his role in developing the Institute of Management and Production and the first Insurance College of Jamaica, or his work as chairman of the Jamaica Western New York Partners of the Americas.

Not so well known, perhaps, was that Dr Hunter was a great believer in the importance of culture in the development of a nation, and while I was dean of the School of Visual Arts, he chaired for many years the Association of Friends of the School of Art (now the School of Visual Arts) of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. This was a registered association run by a board, and under his tenure the friends of the school were instrumental in raising funds to:

Build two large studios and a large underground storeroom at the School.

The 'Friends' also:

Launched overseas Friends of the School.

Awarded scholarships to students of the school.

Set up the first alumnus database where alumni could log on and join the SVA Alumni Association online.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, Dr Hunter was awarded the Outstanding Contributors Award for services to the school.

Dr Hunter was a rare individual and not one to blow his own trumpet. He went about his many projects for the development of this country with integrity and purpose and despite his physical disabilities achieved much to be thankful for.

Jamaica was the richer for his life.
