With roots in ancient India, the Festival of Colours (Holi) announces the arrival of spring and the passing of winter.
The festival breathes an atmosphere of joy and love. People embrace each other in a spirit of reconciliation, forgiveness, and gratitude. Every nook and corner presents a colourful sight. Young and old alike are covered in colour and sing, dance and laugh together.
Holi has a long traditional links with several legends.
According to one legend, the word Holi is derived from the demoness, Holika.
Holika was the sister of Hiranya Kashipu, a demon king, who proclaimed his supremacy over everyone else in the universe.
Enraged over his son's ardent devotion to Lord Vishnu, Hiranya Kashipu decided to punish his young son, and enlisted Holika to help.
Holika carried the small boy into a fire, but a divine intervention destroyed her and saved the boy from being burned. Holi is a commemoration of this act of justice and love.
